Travel China After National Day 2026: What to Book for Oct 8–31

Official holiday ends 7 October. From 8 October you can usually rebuild a classic itinerary with less domestic peak pressure—if you book trains and passport hotels in the right order.

Verdict: If your dates are flexible, skip 1–7 October 2026 for iconic sites and long-haul arrivals into Beijing/Shanghai. Treat 8–31 October as the recovery window: still autumn weather, but domestic holiday traffic falls off. Book intercity trains first, then hotels, then attraction slots.

Official source: State Council General Office notice 国办发明电〔2025〕7号 sets National Day holiday 1–7 October 2026 (Thu–Wed, 7 days). Makeup workdays include 20 September (Sun) and 10 October (Sat). Mid-Autumn is separate: 25–27 September. Read the notice: www.gov.cn. Full autumn map: 2026 festival calendar.

1. What each late-September / October week actually feels like

“After Golden Week” is not magic emptiness. Return traffic still clogs stations on 7–8 October. Use this planning table as a decision aid, not a guarantee for every city:

Dates (2026)What changes for youPractical move
25–27 Sep (Mid-Autumn)First domestic peak; regional trains busyIf already in China, stay local or pre-book every hop
28–30 SepBridge-leave travelers; prices elevatedNot a bargain window—finish big bookings early
1–7 Oct (National Day)Highest hotel/train/attraction pressureAvoid Forbidden City / Disney / Terracotta unless tickets locked
7–8 OctHoliday return rushAvoid same-day international arrival + long train connection
9–12 OctPressure eases; 10 Oct is a workdayStrong start for multi-city loops
13–31 OctNormal autumn tourism + weekendsStill book weekend trains; weekdays are calmer
10 October is not a holiday. The State Council notice lists Saturday 10 October as a makeup workday. Expect weekday commuting in cities—useful for museum visits, less useful if you assumed another long weekend.

2. Booking order that saves rework

  1. Fix city nights on a calendar (example: Beijing 3 / Xi’an 2 / Shanghai 3). Do not buy random attraction tickets before the overnight cities are locked.
  2. Buy G/D trains with passport names on a bookmarked Trip.com China trains tab. Walkthrough: train booking guide. Priority seats: Beijing–Xi’an, Xi’an–Shanghai / Beijing–Shanghai, Shanghai–Hangzhou.
  3. Hotels that accept foreign passports: Trip.com Hotels + filter notes in foreigner-friendly hotels. Prefer free-cancellation rates until flights are firm.
  4. International / domestic flights if needed: Trip.com flights. Landing on 7 or 8 October means longer immigration queues—build buffer.
  5. Timed attractions last (Forbidden City, Disney, major parks). Quotas reopen after the holiday, but weekends still sell out.
  6. Payments + data before you fly: payment hub, VPN vs eSIM.
Rule of thumb: if a train or hotel is still scarce on 8–10 October, shift the overnight city by one night rather than forcing a 6 a.m. connection after immigration.

3. Routes that fit the Oct 8–31 window

Entry paperwork: US citizens usually follow a visa path (US tourist visa steps). Others may use 30-day unilateral visa-free or 240-hour transit—check visa-free list and 30-day countries before non-refundable hotels. General entry: entering China, prepare timeline.

4. Mistakes that waste the window

  • Arriving 1 October “to enjoy the holiday atmosphere.” Atmosphere often means sold-out trains and multi-hour attraction queues.
  • Only booking hotels, forgetting HSR. Soft sleeper / popular G trains restock unevenly; hotels alone do not fix a sold-out Beijing–Shanghai evening departure.
  • Treating 10 October as another holiday. It is a makeup workday per the official notice.
  • Assuming every hotel takes foreign passports. Confirm before payment—see the foreigner-friendly hotels guide above.
  • Skipping payment setup until the airport. Bind wallets at home: WeChat Pay / Alipay tourist.

FAQ

When does China National Day holiday 2026 end?

7 October 2026 (Wednesday), per 国办发明电〔2025〕7号.

How is this different from Chunyun?

Chunyun is the Spring Festival travel rush (separate calendar). See Chunyun 2026 guide if your trip overlaps Chinese New Year instead.
