Why Zhangjiajie & Guilin

China’s most dramatic landscapes live in Hunan and Guangxi.Zhangjiajie is home to the towering sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar, a glass bridge300 metres above a canyon floor, and a world-record cable car ride. Guilin delivers an entirely different beauty — soft karst peaks rising from jade-green rivers, centuries-old rice terraces, and glowing pagodas reflected on still water at night.

Together, they form one of the greatest nature circuits in China. Both destinations sit within the 240-hour visa-free transit zone, making them accessible even on a short layover. This guide covers every highlight, a complete7-day itinerary, transport logistics, and the practical details you need to plan confidently.

Practical Tips

Best Time to Visit

  • Peak season: April–June and September–November — clear skies, comfortable temperatures, misty morning pillars.
  • Avoid: May1–5and October 1–7 (public holidays) — parks reach capacity and prices spike.
  • Summer: June–August — dramatic mist effects but heavy rain can close the Glass Skywalk.
  • Winter: December–February — fewer crowds, potential snow-capped pillars (stunning), but Longji terraces are barren.

Essential Preparation

  • Footwear: Sturdy walking shoes with grip — Zhangjiajie involves thousands of steps daily.
  • Rain gear: Pack a lightweight rain jacket year-round; mountain weather shifts fast.
  • Payment: Set upAlipay or WeChat Pay before arriving — many vendors are fully cashless.
  • Connectivity: Get a VPN and eSIM — signal inside the national park can be patchy.
  • Tickets: Pre-book Zhangjiajie park & Tianmen Mountain — they sell out during peak periods. Use WeChat mini-programs or Trip.com. See our ticket validity guide.
  • Hotels: In Zhangjiajie stay near Wulingyuan gate; in Guilin anywhere near Zhongshan Road works well. See our hotel guide.

FAQ

How many days do I need for Zhangjiajie and Guilin?

Plan5–7 days total:3–4 days for Zhangjiajie (the National Forest Park alone needs 2 full days, plus Tianmen Mountain and the Glass Bridge) and 2–3 days for Guilin and Yangshuo. A tight3+2 split is workable if you’re short on time.

Can I visit both on a240-hour visa-free transit?

Yes. Enter through Changsha Huanghua Airport (CSX) for Zhangjiajie or Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL) for Guilin. Both are approved240-hour visa-free entry ports.240 hours equals 10 full days — plenty for both cities. Check our 240-hour transit guide for eligible countries and rules.

Is it worth visiting both or should I pick one?

They offer completely different scenery — Zhangjiajie has towering sandstone pillars and adrenaline-pumping glass attractions; Guilin has gentle karst mountains and tranquil river cruises. If you have5+ days, absolutely visit both. If only 2–3 days, choose based on whether you prefer adventure or relaxation.

Do I need to book attraction tickets in advance?

Strongly recommended for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain — tickets sell out days in advance during peak season. Li River cruise tickets should be booked 1–2 days ahead. Use WeChat mini-programs or Trip.com for English-language booking.

Is the glass bridge actually scary?

It’s perfectly safe — engineered to hold800 people simultaneously — but yes, many find it nerve-wracking. You must wear flat shoes (no heels), and staff provide shoe covers. Cloudy or misty days reduce the “see through” effect and make it easier. Most visitors say thrilling rather than terrifying.

What’s the best way to travel between the two cities?

High-speed rail is the best option — 4–5 hours with comfortable second-class seating. There are no direct flights. Book on Trip.com for English support. The route runs through gorgeous countryside, so grab a window seat.
