Essential China Apps That Work Without a VPN (2026)
Google Maps, Uber, and WhatsApp are allblocked in China. Here are the Chinese alternatives you actually need — all work without a VPN and most have English support.
What’s blocked and what to use instead
China’s Great Firewall blocks most Western apps and services. But China has builtworld-class alternatives for everything — many of which are actually better than their Western counterparts for navigating China.
The good news: you don’t need a VPN to use any of these apps. They all work natively on Chinese internet. Download them before your trip and you’ll be set.
A VPN lets you access Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and everything else behind the firewall. We recommendSurfshark from $2.19/mo. But even with a VPN, you should still download these Chinese apps — they work better for local services.
Maps & Navigation
Google Maps is blocked. These work perfectly — with English support.
Amap has the best English interface and most accurate transit directions. Download it before your trip and save your hotel address in Chinese — you’ll use it daily.
Transport & Ride-Hailing
Uber doesn’t work. Here’s how to get around.
Each city has its own metro app for QR-code entry (Shanghai: Metro大都会, Beijing: 亿通行). The easiest alternative:add a China T-Union virtual transit card to Apple Wallet via Apple Pay — it works for metro and bus in most major cities, even without data.
Translation & Language
Google Translate is blocked. These alternatives work offline too.
Food & Delivery
Order food, find restaurants, and get groceries delivered.
Most food delivery apps are in Chinese, but you can use your camera translation app to read menus. Better yet: browseDianping for restaurant photos (every dish is photographed), then order in person by pointing at photos on your phone. For delivery, use Ele.me inside Alipay — it has the simplest interface.
Social & Messaging
WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook are all blocked.
Travel Booking & Lifestyle
Book trains, flights, hotels, and tickets — all foreigner-friendly.

Frequently asked questions
Can I download these apps from the App Store / Google Play?
Yes — all apps listed here are available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Download thembefore arriving in China, as Google Play is blocked inside China. iPhone users can download anytime since the App Store works in China.
Do I still need a VPN if I have all these apps?
These apps replace blocked services forlocal tasks (maps, rides, food, payments). But if you want to access your personal Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Google Drive, or any Western social media, you still need a VPN. We recommend Surfshark from $2.19/mo.
Which apps work with international credit cards?
DiDi, Trip.com, Alipay, and WeChat Pay all accept international Visa/Mastercard directly. Most other apps (Meituan, Ele.me, Hellobike) require payment through Alipay or WeChat Pay. Set up Alipay & WeChat Pay first, then everything else works.
Do these apps work without internet?
Most require internet. Exceptions: Apple Translate and Pleco work fully offline (download language packs first). Amap and Baidu Maps can cache maps for offline viewing but need internet for real-time navigation. We recommend getting a China eSIM for reliable data.
Is Amap or Baidu Maps better?
Amap (高德) is better for foreigners — it has a cleaner English interface, more accurate walking directions, and better public transit routing. Baidu Maps has better street-view coverage. We recommend Amap as your primary and Baidu Maps as backup.
Can I use Google Maps with a VPN?
Technically yes, but it’s not recommended for navigation. Google Maps data for China is intentionally offset due to Chinese mapping regulations (GCJ-02 coordinate system), so GPS pins are often50–500 meters off from actual locations. Use Amap for accurate navigation.
How do I order food if the apps are in Chinese?
Three strategies: 1) UseEle.me inside Alipay — simplest interface. 2) Browse Dianping for restaurant photos, then order in person by pointing at dish photos. 3) Use yourcamera translation app (Baidu Translate or Apple Translate) to read menus in real-time.
