Booking Tips

How to get the cheapest flights to China

When to book

2–3 months before departure is the sweet spot. Prices spike within 3 weeks and during peak seasons (Chinese New Year, National Day Oct 1–7, summer).

When to fly

Cheapest: March, April, November. Most expensive: Late Jan/Feb, Jul–Aug, early Oct. Cheapest days: Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Money-saving strategies

Fly into secondary hubs. Chengdu and Xi’an are often20–30% cheaper than Shanghai/Beijing.

Consider a stopover. Flights via Seoul, Tokyo, or Singapore are often cheaper and let you add a bonus city.

Use trains within China. Don’t book multi-city international flights — use¥300–800 domestic flights or high-speed trains internally.

Set price alerts onSkyscanner.

💡 Train vs. plane rule

For distances under 1,000km, high-speed rail is almost always better than flying. City-center stations, no security theater, no delays. Book onTrip.com.

After booking your flight

1. Install a VPN — can’t download in China
2. Buy an eSIM — data from landing
3. Set up Alipay — 99% cashless
4. Book foreigner-friendly hotels
