Does Uber Work in China? (2026)
You can still download Uber (优步) from the China App Store—but on the mainland you generally cannot book a ride. Uber sold its China operations to DiDi in 2016; today Beijing and Shanghai run on DiDi’s network, not Uber’s.
Does Uber work in China? For ride-hailing on the mainland, the answer is no. The Uber app (listed as 优步 on the Chinese App Store) may install and update normally, but it does not dispatch cars in Beijing, Shanghai, or other mainland cities. For actual rides, you need DiDi.

Why travelers still search “Uber China”
Uber operated in mainland China until November 2016, when its service merged into DiDi Chuxing. The Uber app (优步) stayed on app stores, but mainland ride requests no longer route to Uber drivers.
That gap matters in 2026 because travelers see Uber in the App Store, assume rides work, and lose time at the airport. The failure mode is not “can’t download”—it is “no cars / can’t complete a booking” on the mainland map.
What to use instead: DiDi (mainland default)
DiDi is the ride-hailing standard across mainland China—roughly what Uber is in the US. Fares are low (often under ¥30 for a 10 km urban trip on Express), payments are cashless, and English UI is available after you switch language in settings.
Three setup mistakes that look like “Uber doesn’t work”
- Wrong app build: Install DiDi: Ride Hailing in China, not “DiDi-Rider” or other international listings that do not connect to the mainland network.
- No payment before pickup: Bind Visa/Mastercard or Alipay auto-pay in Profile → Payment Methods before you leave the terminal.
- Bad airport pin: Drag the GPS dot to your ride-hailing (网约车) pillar. Drivers cancel illegal curb stops.

Long distances
Anything over ~100 km is usually faster on high-speed rail than a highway car. Book trains on Trip.com; use DiDi for last-mile hotel runs.
Hong Kong and cross-border trips
Uber does work in Hong Kong. That confuses people who land in Shenzhen or Guangzhou after a HK layover. Mainland and HK apps do not share one ride network—you switch tools at the border.

Can I download Uber from the China App Store?
Yes. The passenger app is listed as 优步 on Apple’s China store and updates regularly. That does not mean you can request a ride on the mainland—open the map where you are standing to confirm.
Can I use my US Uber account in China?
Not for mainland rides. Your account history does not transfer to DiDi. Create a DiDi account with your foreign phone number—about five minutes on airport Wi-Fi if SMS works.
Is DiDi the same company as Uber?
They were partners; Uber sold its China operations to DiDi in 2016. Today they are separate companies. DiDi runs the mainland network Uber does not.
What about Bolt, Grab, or Lyft?
