China Golden Week 2026: Two Peak Weeks (Sep 25–Oct 7)
China’s busiest domestic travel season returns with Mid-Autumn Festival (25–27 September) followed by National Day Golden Week (1–7 October). Foreign visitors who can shift dates should—or book trains, hotels, and attraction slots weeks ahead.
Bottom line: treat 25 September through 7 October 2026 as one extended high-demand window. Arrive before 25 September or after 7 October if you want normal queues and easier train tickets.
Why there are two peaks in 2026
In 2025, Mid-Autumn fell inside the National Day block, creating a single extra-long holiday. In 2026, the lunar calendar places Mid-Autumn about a week earlier, so China gets:
- Peak 1: domestic travel rush around 25–27 September (family reunions, mooncakes, regional trips).
- Peak 2: the main Golden Week rush 1–7 October (nationwide tourism, highest hotel pressure).
Some travelers use paid leave on 28–30 September to stitch together an effective 12-day break from 25 September through 7 October. Even if you only travel during National Day week, expect elevated prices from late September onward.

Make-up workdays (2026): public schedules published for 2026 include adjusted working weekends—commonly cited dates are Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October as normal workdays. Banks and government offices may be closed during the holiday blocks; immigration at airports generally stays staffed.
Booking rules that actually matter

- Attractions: the Forbidden City, Shanghai Disney, major national parks, and Zhangjiajie often require timed-entry tickets. Klook and official WeChat mini programs may sell out daily quotas early during Golden Week.
- Flights: domestic legs inside China jump in price; international arrivals on 30 September or 1 October mean longer immigration lines at major hubs.
Industry travel guides commonly suggest booking four to six weeks ahead for autumn peak travel if your dates are fixed. Earlier is better for trains on 1 October itself.
