China Customs for Foreigners 2026: Cash Limits & Red Channel
This is airport / border China Customs—baggage and cash declaration—not etiquette or “social customs.” Official passenger guides say: declare RMB 20,000 or more in cash, or foreign currency cash equivalent to USD 5,000 or more, and use the Goods to Declare (Red) Channel when those or other listed items apply.
China customs for foreigners at the airport is a short compliance step after immigration: tell the truth on the baggage declaration, pick the correct channel, and keep proof if you may take the same foreign cash out later. Most leisure travelers with a phone wallet stack and a modest RMB float never hit the cash line—but the thresholds are fixed in official English passenger guides, not traveler folklore.
Count cash in your bags and pockets before you land. If renminbi notes are RMB 20,000+, or foreign notes are worth about USD 5,000+, plan on the Red Channel and a written declaration. Below those lines and with nothing else listed, the green “nothing to declare” path is the usual route—still follow live airport signs.
This page is not “Chinese social customs”
Search engines often mix chinese customs (border agency) with Chinese customs (etiquette). Our culture pillar covers gifts, face, and banquet rules. This article is only General Administration of Customs–style passenger clearance.

Cash declaration thresholds (official passenger guide)

| What you carry | What official inbound guides say |
|---|---|
| RMB cash | Declare if RMB 20,000 or above. Guides also state the limit of RMB you may bring in or take out is 20,000 yuan; amounts above that are prohibited without the proper control path. |
| Foreign currency cash | Declare if cash is worth USD 5,000 or above (or equivalent). Inbound foreign-currency cash above that line has no simple “free unlimited” story—declaration is required; exit later may depend on that record. |
| Travelers checks / letters of credit | Passenger FX notes in the same guides say there are no quantitative restrictions on bringing in foreign currencies, travelers checks, or letters of credit in the abstract—but cash notes above the USD 5,000 line still need accurate declaration. |
| Leaving later with the same FX cash | If you declare foreign cash above USD 5,000 on entry and may take it out again, guides say fill two declaration forms; Customs endorses and returns one copy for departure. |
Red Channel vs Green Channel

| Channel | Official label (English guides) | When travelers use it |
|---|---|---|
| Green | “Nothing to Declare Channel” | Nothing on the declare list; personal articles within Customs limitations |
| Red | “Goods to Declare Channel” | Cash over thresholds, alcohol/tobacco over listed amounts, animals/plants, radio gear, commercial samples, unaccompanied baggage, prohibited/restricted items, etc. |
Airport layout differs (paper form, tablet, or staffed lane). Follow the signs after baggage claim. If your App or kiosk shows different button labels than this article, trust the live UI—we are not claiming a fixed official button dictionary.
Other common declare triggers (tourists)
Cash is the question most US readers ask. The same inbound table also lists triggers that catch leisure travelers:
- Alcohol / tobacco above listed volumes (e.g. guides cite 1,500 ml+ of drinks at 12%+ alcohol; 400+ cigarettes; 100+ cigars; 500 g+ tobacco—confirm live text).
- Personal articles intended to remain valued at RMB 2,000 or above for non-Chinese residents (Chinese residents have a different high-value line in the same table).
- Animals, plants, biological products, human tissue, blood products
- Radio transmitters / communication security equipment
- Commercial goods, samples, advertisements, unaccompanied baggage
- Prohibited / restricted categories (weapons, counterfeit currency, certain media, narcotics, many fresh foods/soils, etc.—read the prohibited list on the same official pages)
Practical packing note
Medicines and food souvenirs sit in a grey zone between “personal use” and restricted categories. When unsure, use Red Channel and ask—do not rely on forum anecdotes as law. Pair with our packing list for non-customs packing.
Suggested arrival order (customs in context)
- Before landing: Finish any required China digital arrival card / entry card steps that apply to your itinerary (separate from Customs baggage declaration).
- Immigration: Passport, visa / visa-free / transit stamp as applicable—see entering China as a foreigner.
- Baggage claim.
- Customs: Complete declaration if needed → choose Red or Green → submit / be inspected.
- Landside: eSIM/data, wallets, ATM float—first-hour app setup and cash guide.
Customs declaration vs digital arrival card

| Digital arrival / entry card | Customs baggage declaration | |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Immigration / entry data collection (NIA digital card where required) | Declare goods and cash to Customs |
| When | Often before or at immigration, per current NIA rules | After baggage, at Customs lanes |
| Cash thresholds | Not a substitute for Customs cash declaration | RMB 20,000+ / FX ~USD 5,000+ lines apply here |

Leaving China with cash
Outbound passenger notes in the same official family of guides again list RMB 20,000+ or foreign cash ~USD 5,000+ as declare items. For foreign cash you brought in above the line, keep the endorsed copy from entry. If you did not declare on entry (or the recorded amount is lower than what you now carry out), guides say Customs may require a certificate from the Foreign Exchange Bureau or its authorized banks for the discrepancy. Large outbound FX amounts can involve bank “Permit for Carrying Foreign Exchanges” rules under SAFE/Customs measures—plan large cash exits with a bank before you fly, not at the last security queue.
For daily spending, prefer wallets and prepaid bookings so you are not hauling five-figure cash through both directions:
FAQ
How much cash can I bring to China without declaring?
Official inbound guides: stay under RMB 20,000 in renminbi notes and under foreign currency cash worth USD 5,000. At or above those lines, declare. Soft editorial tip: most city trips need far less physical cash if Alipay/WeChat work—see the cash companion article.
Is Alipay / WeChat balance “cash” for Customs?
The passenger tables discuss cash / currency notes (and related FX instruments). Do not treat wallet balances as a substitute for reading the cash rows—and do not invent a loophole. When unsure, ask Customs.
Do I still fill a paper form in 2026?
Some airports push electronic declaration; others still use paper. Follow terminal instructions. We did not run a multi-airport live form audit for this page.
What about gold, drones, or satellite phones?
They can fall under restricted / declare categories. Use Red Channel and official lists; do not rely on this FAQ as a product-by-product license.
Where does “chinese customs” search confusion come from?
English uses one word for border Customs and cultural customs. If you meant etiquette, open the social customs hub linked above.
