Apps Blocked in China (2026 List)

Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, Spotify, ChatGPT, and most Western social networks do not load on Chinese mobile data or hotel Wi-Fi without preparation. Here is the working list and what to install before you fly.

The apps blocked in China are not random. They cluster around foreign social media, uncensored search, and Western cloud services. Chinese apps—WeChat, Alipay, DiDi, Gaode (Amap)—run fine. Your trip breaks when you assume your home-screen icons will behave the same on landing.

Install a paid VPN before departure, download offline maps, and set up Alipay while you still have Gmail access. Skipping that order is how people lose their first afternoon to error screens.

Social, chat, and AI

WhatsApp is the most common panic search after landing. Messages will not send on Chinese SIM data without a stable VPN tunnel. iMessage can work device-to-device but is unreliable for Android friends and for backups.

ChatGPT joined the blocked list for most travelers: the website and mobile app time out on mainland networks. If you rely on AI for trip notes, export them offline or run your VPN before opening the app.

Google stack replacements

  • Maps: Amap (Gaode) or Apple Maps as backup—not Google Maps.
  • Search: Bing works; for addresses inside China, Amap search is more accurate.
  • Translate: WeChat built-in translate, Pleco, or offline Google Translate packs downloaded at home.
  • Email: If Gmail is blocked, use your VPN or set up auto-forward to an accessible inbox before travel.

What works without a VPN (do not skip these)

China is not “offline.” It is a parallel app ecosystem. These work on local data and should be on your phone before immigration:

  • WeChat — messaging, mini-programs, some payments
  • Alipay — scans, transit cards, foreign card linking in 2026
  • DiDi — ride-hailing (replaces Uber)
  • Amap — navigation and metro routing
  • Trip.com / Klook — trains, hotels, attraction tickets

Setup order: first-hour app setup.

The fix: VPN + eSIM (install before the flight)

Free VPNs fail or leak in China. We test paid services that reconnect after sleep and work on hotel Wi-Fi. Install on every device you carry; log in once at home to confirm.

VPN connected. Install and test a paid VPN at home before you fly—then reconnect on landing before opening Gmail or WhatsApp.

Mobile data matters as much as VPN: airport Wi-Fi often blocks VPN handshakes. A China travel eSIM gives you a clean path on landing.

FAQ

Does Google Translate work in China?
Often partially without VPN; camera translate may fail on hotel Wi-Fi. Download offline language packs at home and carry a VPN for full access.
Does Apple Maps work in China?
In major cities, yes for basic routing. Amap is still more reliable for metro exits and hutong addresses.
Does Spotify work in China?
No on mainland networks without VPN. Download playlists for offline listening before departure.
Does ChatGPT work in China?
No without VPN. Do not plan on live AI access for visa forms or translation at the border.
Is using a VPN illegal for tourists?
Tourists commonly use VPNs for personal communication. Read our 2026 legal primer for nuance—not legal advice.
