Essential China Apps That Work Without a VPN (2026)
Google Maps, Uber, and WhatsApp are allblocked in China. Here are the Chinese alternatives you actually need — all work without a VPN and most have English support.
What’s blocked and what to use instead
China’s Great Firewall blocks most Western apps and services. But China has builtworld-class alternatives for everything — many of which are actually better than their Western counterparts for navigating China.
The good news: you don’t need a VPN to use any of these apps. They all work natively on Chinese internet. Download them before your trip and you’ll be set.

Google Maps is blocked. These work perfectly — with English support.
Amap has the best English interface and most accurate transit directions. Download it before your trip and save your hotel address in Chinese — you’ll use it daily.

Each city has its own metro app for QR-code entry (Shanghai: Metro大都会, Beijing: 亿通行). The easiest alternative:add a China T-Union virtual transit card to Apple Wallet via Apple Pay — it works for metro and bus in most major cities, even without data.

Most food delivery apps are in Chinese, but you can use your camera translation app to read menus. Do I still need a VPN if I have all these apps?

Which apps work with international credit cards?
DiDi, Trip.com, Alipay, and WeChat Pay all accept international Visa/Mastercard directly. Most other apps (Meituan, Ele.me, Hellobike) require payment through Alipay or WeChat Pay. Set up Alipay & WeChat Pay first, then everything else works.
Do these apps work without internet?

Is Amap or Baidu Maps better?
Amap (高德) is better for foreigners — it has a cleaner English interface, more accurate walking directions, and better public transit routing. Baidu Maps has better street-view coverage. We recommend Amap as your primary and Baidu Maps as backup.
Can I use Google Maps with a VPN?
Technically yes, but it’s not recommended for navigation. Google Maps data for China is intentionally offset due to Chinese mapping regulations (GCJ-02 coordinate system), so GPS pins are often50–500 meters off from actual locations. Use Amap for accurate navigation.
