Know before you go.

Three ways to enter China in 2026
China now offers multiple entry options for foreign travelers. Your best path depends on your nationality, trip length, and itinerary.
Transit through China for up to 240 hours (10 days) without a visa. You must be traveling from Country A → China → Country C (different countries).
- ✓ No visa application needed
- ✓ 55 eligible countries
- ✓60designated entry ports
- ✕ Must have onward ticket to third country
- ✕ Cannot return to origin country
Citizens of 30+ countries can enter China directly for up to 15–30 days without any visa. No transit routing needed — fly in, fly out from the same country.
- ✓ No visa, no transit routing
- ✓ Enter and exit from any port
- ✓ Travel freely within China
- ✕ Limited to specific nationalities
- ✕ US, Canada, UK may not qualify
The traditional tourist visa for travelers who don’t qualify for visa-free entry or need a longer stay. Apply at your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate.
- ✓ Available to all nationalities
- ✓ 30, 60, or 90 day options
- ✓ Single or multiple entry
- ✕ Requires application (5–10 business days)
- ✕ Costs $140–185(varies by country)
Check the30-day visa-free list first — if your country is on it, you don’t need to do anything except show up with a valid passport. If not, the240-hour transit is the next best option (just book an onward flight to a third country). Only apply for a tourist visa if neither option works for you.

What to prepare regardless of your entry path
No matter which entry path you use, you’ll need these basics:
1. Valid passport — at least 6 months validity beyond your entry date, with 2+ blank pages.
2. Return/onward flight — immigration may ask to see proof of departure.
3. Hotel booking — at least your first night at aforeigner-friendly hotel.
4. Digital prep — VPN, eSIM, Alipay, and essential apps. See our Digital Survival Kit.
You MUST have aconfirmed onward ticket to a third country (not your origin country). Print it out — immigration officers may not accept digital screenshots. Also, you’re restricted to the designated transit area (usually the province you entered). Check our 240-hour transit guide for the full rules.
Can Americans enter China without a visa?
Not for direct entry. However, US citizens can use the 240-hour visa-free transit policy — fly from the US to China, then onward to a third country (e.g., Japan, Thailand). This gives you up to 10 days in China without a visa. Otherwise, you need a tourist visa (L visa). Check our 240-hour transit guide for details.
What’s the difference between visa-free entry and visa-free transit?
Visa-free entry (30-day): You can fly directly to China and back to your home country. No transit routing needed. Visa-free transit (240-hour): You must be traveling A → China → C (different countries). You cannot return to your origin country directly.
How long can I stay in China without a visa?
It depends on your nationality and entry method. 30-day visa-free: 15–30 days depending on your country. 240-hour transit: up to 10 days (240 hours). Tourist visa: 30, 60, or 90 days depending on your visa type.
Do I need to register with police after arriving?
Yes — all foreigners must register with the local PSB within 24 hours of arrival. If you’re staying at a hotel, they handle this automatically at check-in. If staying with a friend, you must register at the local police station in person.
Can I extend my stay?
For visa-free entry and transit: generally no extensions. You must leave before your permitted stay expires. For tourist visas: extensions are possible at the local PSB Exit-Entry Administration office, but not guaranteed. Apply at least 7 days before your visa expires.
What documents should I carry at all times?
Always carry your passport (original, not a copy). You’ll need it for hotel check-in, train stations, attraction tickets, and random police checks. Keep a digital copy in your email as backup.
Ready to go? Book the essentials.
Once you’ve confirmed your entry path, lock in flights and hotels early — especially during peak season (April–May, Sep–Nov).
