Setups
Four things to set up before your flight.
These four digital setups prevent 95% of first-timer disasters in China.
Install a VPN
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram — all blocked. A VPN bypasses the Great Firewall so your apps work normally.
Best VPNs →Get an eSIM
No SIM = no internet. An eSIM gives you instant mobile data from $3.90. Activate before you board.
Best eSIMs →Set Up Payments
Cash is refused everywhere. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your foreign card before departure.
Payment Guide →Download Key Apps
Maps, translation, ride-hailing — the Chinese alternatives you need when Western apps don’t work.
App Guide →Set up payments before you land.
95% of transactions in China are cashless. Street vendors, taxis, restaurants — everyone expects Alipay or WeChat Pay.
Frequently asked questions.
Should I set everything up before or after arriving?
Before. Set up your VPN, eSIM, and mobile payments before departure. It is easier outside mainland China, and you avoid the classic landing problem: no map, no messaging, no payment.
Do I need both a VPN and an eSIM?
Yes, for most travelers. The eSIM gives you mobile data; the VPN helps you access blocked services. Without data, your phone is limited. Without a VPN, your internet can be heavily restricted.
Can I survive in China with only cash or international cards?
It is possible, but inconvenient. Major hotels and some chain stores accept cards, but many everyday scenarios are mobile-payment first. For smoother travel, set up Alipay and WeChat Pay in advance.
Do I need both Alipay and WeChat Pay?
Having both is ideal. If you only set up one, start with Alipay, then add WeChat Pay as backup. Merchant preference can vary by city and business type.
What is the minimum setup if I am short on time?
At minimum: one working VPN, one eSIM plan, and one mobile payment app linked to your foreign card. This baseline solves most first-day failures.

“I landed in Shanghai with zero preparation. My phone went dark the moment we touched the tarmac.”
Google Maps wouldn’t load. WhatsApp was dead. The cash I brought was refused at a coffee shop.
That trip was a disaster — and it didn’t need to be. I built StartChinaTravel to be the digital sherpa I wish I’d had on that first day.

Followed the eSIM guide and had connectivity the moment I turned off airplane mode at PVG. Absolute lifesaver.
The Alipay setup guide is the clearest I’ve found anywhere. Had my foreign card linked in under 10 minutes.
Didn’t realize 50+ countries now get 30-day visa-free. This site had the most up-to-date info anywhere.
